What I’ve Been Reading and Loving Lately

Hi everyone! I haven’t exactly been reading as much as I usually do, and I’ve been blogging even less. Don’t get me wrong, I still love both of these things, but I’ve been focusing more on other stuff. And every time I’ve read something great and I sat down to review it, I ended up staring at a blank screen for an hour. It’s just too much pressure I think, writing a very formal 400+ word piece on a book, and needing everything to be grammatically correct and structured and everything like that. But I still want to share some of the things I’ve been reading and loving lately, so I thought I’d make a little less formal post sharing my love for all of these things. And I loved writing this.

The first thing I want to talk about is the Violet Hill series by Chelsea M. Cameron. I started Second Kiss because Fadwa from Word Wonders recommended it to me and told me it was incredibly happy and fluffy. And she was completely right. This novella was the cutest thing I’ve read in a while, and it made me smile so much!

I, of course, immediately wanted to read the rest of the series, but I didn’t have the money to buy them all. Then, a pretty happy accident happened. Well, maybe I shouldn’t call it that. It was more of a shitty accident that turned into something kinda positive? Anyway, I was doing my bills and I suddenly saw that Scribd had taken money out of my account. And then I remembered that I had started a 30 day free trial with them to listen to the When Dimple Met Rishi audiobook (which I also loved, btw) but I never canceled it. Which is shitty because, you know, money, but then I found out that they had quite a wide arrangement of (f/f) books that I wanted to read. And it also had the Violet Hill series! So of course, I immediately started Double Exposure, which I loved as well. And I’m currently making my way through the third novella, called Second Chance.

The Violet Hill series is a series that takes place in a bakery and every novella follows another sapphic relationship that’s somehow connected to the bakery. Every single one of these stories is so incredibly cute, heart warming and easy to read, and I would definitely recommend them to anyone!

(Also, in case you’re curious about my f/f Scribd TBR, I’m planning on getting to Style by Chelsea M. Cameron, We Awaken by Calista Lynne, Treasure by Rebekah Weatherspoon, Roller Girl by Canessa North, Certainly, Possibly, You by Lissa Reed and Shattered by Lee Winter. Please wish me luck, because I’m definitely going to need it if I want to finish all of these without having to renew my subscription for another month. Or can I still use the credits I have once I cancel my subscription? Hmm, I should probably look into that.)

Something I’ve also been loving a lot lately are comics, and I wanted to highlight a few of my favorite ones.

Power Up is an incredibly cute one about a few people (and a goldfish) who suddenly get superpowers and they have no idea what to do with them. Also, there’s aliens. Slam! is about badass ladies, female friendships and roller derby. Goldie Vance is about a girl who solves mysteries, and it’s super cute and queer. And finally, my favorite Hi-Fi Fight Club (or, Heavy Vinyl.) This one is about a girl who start working in a record store and then finds out that the other employees fight crime after hours. Also, the MC is queer (and fawns over one of the other girls throughout the comic and it’s the most adorable thing) and the art in this one is absolutely GORGEOUS. Like, ‘I’ve-made-it-my-screensaver’ type of gorgeous.

I also have these three poetry collections on my December TBR pile that I really wanted to talk about! I got all three of them for review, which I’m incredibly grateful for. I’ve already started Afterlife by Melissa Jennings, and I’m really liking it so far. I haven’t finished it yet because it deals with some heavy things and my mental health couldn’t handle it, but I’m certain I will love it when my mind is in a better place. And I have a feeling that this collection is only going to get better and better.

I haven’t started either of the other poetry collections yet, but I know I’m going to love them. I’ve already read the sample version of Soft in the Middle by Shelby Eileen and I adored it so much, and I’m expecting to feel the same way about the whole thing. Also, can we just take a moment to talk about how gorgeous the cover is? Because it’s one of the prettiest things I’ve ever seen!

I’m very excited to start poems for the sound of the sky before thunder by Topaz Winters because I’m a huge fan of hers ever since I read Heaven or This, which is her poetry collection all about girls loving girls. It’s gorgeous. I’m subscribed to her newsletter and supported her on Patreon for a while (which I sadly had to end because of my financial situation) and I devour everything she writes. She’s beyond talented, and the way she can use words to create such wonderful and magical things blows my mind.

I think that’s everything I wanted to cover in this post! Now, please tell me something that you’ve read and absolutely fell in love with recently!
