Where I’ve Been + Upcoming Releases I’m Excited About

Hey everyone, I hope you’ve all been doing incredibly well! As you might have noticed (or not, I understand) I’ve been away for quite a while. I slowly want to get back to blogging, so I thought the perfect comeback post would be a bit of a combination of an explanation of why I’ve been gone, and the thing that’s actually making me want to blog again: very exciting upcoming releases!

So, as for why I’ve been away: I’ve been slumpling. I actually still am. And not just a reading and blogging slump, but more of an everything-slump. My final exams are coming up (they’re two weeks away now, AAAH) and I’m incredibly stressed and anxious about them because if I pass them it means that I’m graduating and the future is super scary and what if I don’t actually graduate and I fail horribly and… everything just got a little too much, and my mental health started going downhill fast.

So, over the past few months I’ve only touched a handful of books, I fell behind on my Goodreads reading challenge (which is something that hasn’t happened in quite some time), and didn’t write a single blogpost besides a blog tour one which I’d already committed to. And it sucks. Blogging and reading has been apart of my life for quite a few years now and for that to fall away… it really isn’t fun. But I also didn’t want to force myself to read/blog when I didn’t actually want to, because I know that’d only make it worse.

But on the other hand, I’m quite done with this slump so am I forcing myself to write this post? Mayhaps. But I’ve also really wanted to start writing again, and the thing that’s been making me want to write is the incredibly exciting upcoming new releases for April/May, because there’s quite a few really good one’s. And hopefully writing about them will actually make me want to start reading again, and not just want to want to start reading again. If that makes any sense. I hope so.

So, here’s a list of the upcoming releases I’m most excited about!

Love From A to Z by S.K. Ali – I was a huge fan of S.K. Ali’s debut, Saints and Misfits, and I’ve been hearing the absolute best things about Love From A to Z, which gives me very high hopes that this book will be just as good, if not better. Also, can we appreciate that cover for a second? I love it so, so much.
Hot Dog Girl by Jennifer Dugan – I wasn’t incredibly excited about this book (don’t get me wrong, it sounds really adorable but it just wasn’t on top of my tbr list) but then I heard that it’s queer so…. now I need to read it. Obviously. may7th

With the Fire on High by Elizabeth Acevedo – Elizabeth Acevedo’s The Poet X was easily one of my favorite releases of last year and I think she’s absolutely incredible, so I have the highest expectations of the book. But for once, I’m not scared of going into a book with high expectations, because I’m 100% certain that this book will deliver. It’s going to be great.
Her Royal Highness by Rachel Hawkins – I read Royals, the first book in this series, quite a few months ago, and I had a lot of fun with it. It definitely wasn’t the best book of all time, but I enjoyed it very much. So when I saw that there was going to be a second book, and that it was going to be f/f, I immediately added it to my TBR and I’ve been excited for it ever since.
Other Words for Home by Jasmine Warga – I have to be honest with you, I’m not quite sure what this was about. I just know that it has the most gorgeous cover (yes, sometimes I add books to my TBR solely because of how much I love the cover, it’s fine), it’s a middle grade, and it’s written in verse. And honestly, that’s all I need to know.
Somewhere Only We Know by Maurene Goo – I was incredibly excited about this book when it was first announced because 1) it’s a kpop book and I recently got into kpop so that’s very exciting and 2) I LOVED Maurene Goo’s The Way You Make Me Feel. However, I’m currently a bit more hesistant about it because I read my friend Romie’s review of it and she didn’t love it, I remembered that I didn’t actually love another book I read by Maurene Goo (I Believe in a Thing Called Love), and I learned that the book is set in a single day, which I don’t tend to love… I definitely still plan on reading it and some of the excitement is still there but… It’s a lot less than it was at first. may14th

Don’t Date Rosa Santos by Nina Moreno – Now this is a book that I’ve added to my TBR because of Twitter people. Mostly Rocky from Blonde with a Book. And am I really planning on reading a book just because people on Twitter are screaming about it even though I hardly know anything about it? Of course I am.
I Wish You All the Best by Mason Deaver – Now this book makes me a bit emotional because I’ve been following Mason for quite a while now and I remember them talking about this book before it was announced, and then it was announced, and now it’s almost here… I’m beyond excited. Because this book sounds incredible, and like it’s going to change the world.
Red White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston – This is yet another book I’m picking up because of Twitter people, and I’m beyond excited about it. Everything about this book sounds so good and so fun and everyone seems to be loving it and just, yes. If I could pick up a book right this second, this book would be it. Because it definitely sounds like the book that’d get me out of my slump, and make me fall in love with reading again.
There’s Something About Sweetie by Sandhya Menon – I’ve read and loved everything Sandhya Menon has written so far, but I’m convinced that this is going to be the title I’m going to love the most out of all of them because… Fat, athletic Desi main character. Yes please. And HAVE YOU SEEN THAT COVER? I haven’t read a single word of this book, and I already love it a ton. may 21st

Going Off Script by Jen Wilde – Jen Wilde is another author I’ve read and loved before, and I always have the absolute best time while reading her books. She has the best characters and the best plots and the best settings and… I just love them a lot, okay? And this one is set in Hollywood? And it’s f/f? YES.
Symptoms of a Heartbreak by Sona Charaipotra – I really liked the Tiny Pretty Things duology, which Sona Charaipotra co-wrote with Dhonielle Clayton, and I’m very excited to check out some of her solo stuff. I haven’t heard a ton about Symptoms of a Heartbreak review-wise, but I have a feeling that it could be really good. I’m looking forward to reading it. may28thAll the Ways Home by Elsie Chapman – All the Ways Home is the only book on this list that I’ve actually already read, but I wanted to include it anyway because this book is lovely and it deserves all the hype. It’s about a boy who, after his mother dies, visits his brother in Tokyo for the first time and tries to find out what ‘home’ means to him. It’s incredibly lovely, and it’s that kind of book that I want to read over and over and over again. Please add it to your TBR.
The Kingdom by Jesse Rothenberg – I hadn’t really heard anything about this book until the cover appeared on my timeline recently, and I was immediately intrigued. And then I looked at the synopsis and the very first line (“Welcome to the Kingdom… where ‘Happily Ever After’ isn’t just a promise, but a rule.“) immediately won me over and now I want to read this book like, right now. Immediately. Please.
I Love You So Mochi by Sarah Kuhn – Sarah Kuhn is an author that’s been on my to-read list for quite some time (I even have one of her books, Heroine Complex, on my TBR shelf), and I can’t belief I still haven’t actually read anything by her. I must fix that ASAP. And maybe I’ll do that by reading I Love You So Mochi, because it sounds like the cutest thing in the world.

So, those are the upcoming releases I’m most excited about! What about you? What May release are you most excited about?

YAYAYAY I’m so glad that you’re writing again!! (I know it sucks to be in a slump 😦 I’m still really glad to see that you’re trying to ease back into it though but still don’t force yourself on bad days but yes either way I’m really glad to see this post ❤ ) I honestly love all the books that you mentioned!! I'm so so so excited for all of them. Love From A to Z has one of the most beautiful covers ever, and I can't wait to support it. Plus, I can't wait to read Hot Dog Girl…and ADFJKSALFJDSKLAF I CANNOT WAIT for Somewhere Only We Know!! I'm also a little hesitant. I really liked I Believe in a Thing Called Love, but I didn't love The Way You Make Me Feel. Fingers crossed that we both enjoy it 🙂

  4. Caitlin @ Caitlin Althea zegt:

We share mostly the same anticipated releases! I’m excited but ngl, kinda scared for what this is gonna do to my already massive TBR :,) like you, I’ve heard so much buzz about Red, White & Royal Blue, and I’m so excited to hopefully, probably, read it and love it as well 💙❤️

  5. Marie zegt:

I’m so sorry you’ve been in a slump, Laura, I’m glad you’re slowly easing back to it and I’m wishing you all the best for your exams and for everything else. The future is so, so very scary Im right here with you and here if you ever need to talk. ❤
I love your anticipated books so much! I cant wait to read Red, White & Royal Blue as well as Don't Date Rosa Santos, both sound incredible ❤

  6. christine @ lady gets lit zegt:

This is such a lovely list and just inspired me to be SO HYPED for these books! Some I hadn’t even heard of yet so I’m even more excited now!

I’m sorry to hear that you’ve been in a slump, but hopefully things will improve soon. Regardless, you have to take care of yourself first, and you’re the only one who can decide what that means to you. The future is terrifying (and it doesn’t stop being terrifying ever, I don’t think? that I know of yet?) but all you can do is take it a little bit at a time. I’m sending you lots of love and hope and good vibes going forward ❤

  7. May @ Forever and Everly zegt:

May is literally going to KILL us all. I think I’m going to have to treat myself to a few books when I get out of school at the end of month because there is no way I can’t not have these 😅😎 May 14th is the day I’m most excited for I think! IWYATB, RW&RB, The Candle and the Flame, and We Hunt the Flame are some of my most anticipated books!!

  8. JJ Crafts zegt:

I’ve been in such a blogging slump lately too but I’m trying to force myself back in recently.
There are SO MANY may releases to be excited about. I Wish You All the Best is one of mine too but also Deposing Nathan, Switchback, and Planet Earth is Blue are also ones I’m really looking forward to. (I could go on but I’ll stop there haha)

  9. Lais @ The Bookish Skies zegt:

Laura, I can totally understand when you say you’ve been on a life-slump. Last year, I was pretty much in the same spot, and I dropped a lot of things I’ve loved doing because I couldn’t cope with my anxiety towards college-entrance exams. It’s a loooot of pressure, but I’m sending you some positive vibes so you can go through it in the smoothes way possible! 💛
There are so many amazing titles coming out this May and I can’t wait. I don’t know if I’ll be able to get to all of them, but There’s Something About Sweetie and Red, White & Royal Blue are my top priorities, that’s for sure!
