MEET KIRANMALA: INTERDIMENSIONAL DEMONSLAYER

(But she doesn’t know it yet.)

On the morning of her twelfth birthday, Kiranmala is just a regular sixth grader living in Parsippany, New Jersey… until her parents mysteriously vanish later that day and a rakkhosh demon slams through her kitchen, determined to eat her alive. Turns out there might be some truth to her parents’ fantastical stories—like how Kiranmala is a real Indian princess—and a wealth of secrets about her origin they’ve kept hidden.

To complicate matters, two crushworthy Indian princes ring her doorbell, insisting they’re here to rescue her. Suddenly, Kiran is swept into another dimension full of magic, winged horses, moving maps, and annoying, talking birds. There she must solve riddles and slay demons all while avoiding the Serpent King of the underworld (who may or may not want to kill her) and the rakkhosh queen (who definitely does) in order to find her parents and basically save New Jersey, her entire world, and everything beyond it…

The Serpent’s Secret is one of my most anticipated releases of 2017 because everything about it sounds so incredibly exciting. From the ‘Indian princess’, to the ‘solve riddles’, to the ‘other dimension’ and ‘demonslayer’, it just sounds like everything I want in a book. Especially the sentence “Suddenly, Kiran is swept into another dimension full of magic, winged horses, moving maps, and annoying, talking birds” made me so, so hyped. I have a feeling it’s going to be super adventurous, funny, and I strongly suspect I’m going to love Kiranmala.

Also, the cover is just beyond gorgeous?? I can’t wait to finally have it in my hands and be able to stare at it 24/7. It’s honestly one of my favorite middle grade covers, ever. I know that’s a pretty big statement, but it’s true. I hope I’ll be able to say that it’s my overall favorite middle grade book ever soon. And yes, my expectations might be a little too high (woops), but I’m sure I won’t be disappointed. February 27 can’t come soon enough!

Mercedes Moreno is an artist. At least, she thinks she could be, even though she hasn’t been able to paint anything worthwhile since her award-winning piece Food Poisoning #1 last year.

Her lack of inspiration might be because her abuela is lying comatose in faraway Puerto Rico after suffering a stroke. Or the fact that Mercedes is in love with her best friend, Victoria, but is too afraid to admit her true feelings.

Despite Mercedes’s creative block, art starts to show up in unexpected ways. A piano appears on her front lawn one morning, and a mysterious new neighbor invites Mercedes to paint with her at the Red Mangrove Estate.

At the Estate, Mercedes can create in ways she never has before. She can share her deepest secrets and feel safe. But Mercedes can’t take anything out of the Estate, including her new-found clarity. As her life continues to crumble around her, the Estate offers more solace than she could hope for. But Mercedes can’t live both lives forever, and ultimately she must choose between this perfect world of art and truth and a much messier reality.

wowI think the synopsis says it all here. I adore books with F/F romances, but the fact that it also features art and family relationships makes it sound absolutely perfect! And it sounds a bit magical realism-ish? Sign. Me. Up.

I do have to be honest with you and say that I really don’t like the cover. I’m a big fan of those pastel cutesy contemporary covers, but the fact that it might have something to do with the art in the book makes it a lot better. However, if I didn’t know this book and saw it somewhere in a bookstore, I probably wouldn’t have picked it up. Thank God for Goodreads, right?

WoW: Long May She Reign by Rhiannon Thomas

Long May She ReignTitle: Long May She Reign

Author: Rhiannon Thomas
Genres: YA, Fantasy
Published: February 21st, 2017 by HarperTeen
Goodreads

The Girl of Fire and Thorns meets The Queen of the Tearling in this thrilling fantasy standalone about one girl’s unexpected rise to power.
Freya was never meant be queen. Twenty third in line to the throne, she never dreamed of a life in the palace, and would much rather research in her laboratory than participate in the intrigues of court. However, when an extravagant banquet turns deadly and the king and those closest to him are poisoned, Freya suddenly finds herself on the throne.
Freya may have escaped the massacre, but she is far from safe. The nobles don’t respect her, her councillors want to control her, and with the mystery of who killed the king still unsolved, Freya knows that a single mistake could cost her the kingdom – and her life.Freya is determined to survive, and that means uncovering the murderers herself. Until then, she can’t trust anyone. Not her advisors. Not the king’s dashing and enigmatic illegitimate son. Not even her own father, who always wanted the best for her, but also wanted more power for himself. As Freya’s enemies close in and her loyalties are tested, she must decide if she is ready to rule and, if so, how far she is willing to go to keep the crown.

Why I’m waiting: I found this book while browsing through Goodreads looking for 2017 releases, and I got so excited about it! Long May She Reign might actually be one of my most anticipated 2017 releases, so I’m very glad that I only have to wait until February, and not until the end of next year. That’d just be torture. But still, February feels too far away!
This book sounds like it’s right up my alley. An unbelievably smart girl who loves being in her labratory suddenly becomes queen and has to solve a mass-murder? Yes, please! I love books about people unexpectedly having to rule a land (like My Lady Jane), but if you add a scientist and an unsolved murder to that, I’m sold. And I have a feeling that the king’s illegitimate son is going to be very swoon-worthy. (Or maybe he’s super evil, but that’d be interesting too.)

WoW: Heartstone by Ellen Katharine White

HeartstoneTitle: Heartstone

Author: Ellen Katharine White
Genres: Fantasy, Retellings
Published: by Harper Voyager on January 17th, 2017
Goodreads

A debut historical fantasy that recasts Jane Austen’s beloved Pride and Prejudice in an imaginative world of wyverns, dragons, and the warriors who fight alongside them against the monsters that threaten the kingdom: gryphons, direwolves, lamias, banshees, and lindworms

They say a Rider in possession of a good blade must be in want of a monster to slay—and Merybourne Manor has plenty of monsters. Passionate, headstrong Aliza Bentaine knows this all too well; she’s already lost one sister to the invading gryphons. So when Lord Merybourne hires a band of Riders to hunt down the horde, Aliza is relieved her home will soon be safe again. Her relief is short-lived. With the arrival of the haughty and handsome dragonrider, Alastair Daired, Aliza expects a battle; what she doesn’t expect is a romantic clash of wills, pitting words and wit against the pride of an ancient house. Nor does she anticipate the mystery that follows them from Merybourne Manor, its roots running deep as the foundations of the kingdom itself, where something old and dreadful slumbers . . . something far more sinister than gryphons. It’s a war Aliza is ill-prepared to wage, on a battlefield she’s never known before: one spanning kingdoms, class lines, and the curious nature of her own heart.

Elle Katharine White infuses elements of Austen’s beloved novel with her own brand of magic, crafting a modern epic fantasy that conjures a familiar yet wondrously unique new world.’

Why I’m waiting: an epic fantasy retelling of Pride and Prejudice? With dragons?? YES PLEASE! This book sounds absolutely amazing! Small confession, though: I almost skipped this book while scrolling through a list of 2017-releases because I don’t really like the cover. What do people say, again? Don’t judge a book by it’s cover? That’s the obvious case here, for me. But I won’t make that same mistake twice. (Okay, I probably will.)
However, besides all the amazing stuff (again, DRAGONS AND PRIDE&PREJUDICE), there’s a small downside to this book: how am I supposed to wait until 2017?? I NEED THIS NOW. Please.

WOW: A Torch Against the Night (An Ember in the Ashes #2) by Sabaa Tahir

A Torch Against the Night (An Ember in the Ashes, #2)Title: A Torch Against the Night

Author: Sabaa Tahir
Genres: YA, Fantasy
Published: August 30th, 2016 by Razorbill
Series: An Ember in the Ashes (#2)
Goodreads

‘A Torch Against the Night takes readers into the heart of the Empire as Laia and Elias fight their way north to liberate Laia’s brother from the horrors of Kauf Prison. Hunted by Empire soldiers, manipulated by the Commandant, and haunted by their pasts, Laia and Elias must outfox their enemies and confront the treacherousness of their own hearts.

In the city of Serra, Helene Aquilla finds herself bound to the will of the Empire’s twisted new leader, Marcus. When her loyalty is questioned, Helene finds herself taking on a mission to prove herself—a mission that might destroy her, instead.’

Why I’m waiting: An Ember in the Ashes was, without a doubt, one of my favourite books of 2015. It had (almost) everything I want in a book, and I’m super excited to find out what will happen to Laia and Elias next! And look at that cover! I love it so much!
I might have to re-read An Ember in the Ashes, because I can’t really remember everything that happened, but I don’t mind that at all. (My TBR-pile would mind it, but oh well, you can’t please everyone.)

WoW: The Ship Beyond Time (The Girl From Everywhere #2) by Heidi Heilig

The Ship Beyond Time (The Girl From Everywhere, #2)Title: The Ship Beyond Time

Series: The Girl From Everywhere (#2)
Goodreads

‘Nix has spent her whole life journeying to places both real and imagined aboard her time-traveling father’s ship. And now it’s finally time for her to take the helm. How can she bear to become as adrift and alone as her father?Desperate to change her fate, Nix takes her crew to a mythical utopia to meet another Navigator who promises to teach her how to manipulate time. Nix must grapple with whether anyone can escape her destiny, her history, her choices. Heidi Heilig weaves fantasy, history, and romance together to tackle questions of free will, fate, and what it means to love another person. But at the center of this adventure are the extraordinary, multifaceted, and multicultural characters that leap off the page, and an intricate, recognizable world that has no bounds. The sequel—and conclusion—to the indie darling The Girl from Everywhere will be devoured by fans of Rachel Hartman and Maggie Stiefvater.’

Why I’m waiting: Not too long ago, I posted this review of the first book in this series: The Girl From Everywhere. Since finishing that book, I’ve found myself thinking a lot about the characters; are Kashmir and Nix together? How is Blake handling life on the ship? Where are they going next?
When I read the synopsis of The Ship Beyond Time, I knew I needed this book ASAP. A mythical utopia? A person who teaches her how to manipulate time? Omg, that just sounds amazing. But the possibility of losing Kash? Not that exciting, or rather, the opposite of exciting. Please, Heidi, don’t let that happen.
But seriously, I can’t wait. And just look at that cover! It’s absolutely gorgeous.

WOW: Kids of Appetite

I know, I know, I’m not very good at doing bookish memes. Or, at least, I’m not good at the structure and planning that comes with it. I’m not one for doing a certain meme every single week. I’d rather do a TTT when the subject is interesting to me, a Friday Finds when I find exciting new books and a WOW when I find a book I’m really looking forward to. And, as you can see, I found a book that isn’t published yet, but I’m very looking forward to, so here is another WOW!

Kids of AppetiteTitle: Kids of Appetite

Author: David Arnold
Genres: Young Adult, Contemporary
Published: by Viking Books for Young Readers on September 20th, 2016

‘The bestselling author of Mosquitoland brings us another batch of unforgettable characters in this tragicomedy about first love and devastating loss.
Victor Benucci and Madeline Falco have a story to tell.It begins with the death of Vic’s father. It ends with the murder of Mad’s uncle. The Hackensack Police Department would very much like to hear it.But in order to tell their story, Vic and Mad must focus on all the chapters in between.
This is a story about:
1. A coded mission to scatter ashes across New Jersey.2. The momentous nature of the Palisades in winter.3. One dormant submarine.4. Two songs about flowers.5. Being cool in the traditional sense.6. Sunsets & ice cream & orchards & graveyards.7. Simultaneous extreme opposites.8. A narrow escape from a war-torn country.9. A story collector.10. How to listen to someone who does not talk.11. Falling in love with a painting.12. Falling in love with a song.13. Falling in love.’

Why I’m waiting: I first spotted this book on Netgalley, and when I read the synopsis I was hooked! I mean, that ‘this is a story about’ list is very intriguing. I’ve heard a lot of good things about David Arnold’s first book, Mosquitoland, so I hope Kids of Appetite will be just as good.

Infused with emotion and rich with understanding, Summerlost is the touching middle grade debut from Ally Condie, the international bestselling author of the Matched series, that highlights the strength of family and personal resilience in the face of tragedy’

This book sounds like one of those cliché contemporaries that I love to read while sitting in the garden on a hot summer day. Because the synopsis sounds so cliché I am not overly enthousiastic about it, but I think it’ll be a very enjoyable summer read.
Oh, and I love the cover! The typography is amazing!

“She must go on a dangerous quest in a world of warring kingdoms, mad kings, and dark magic” even though this book sounds like a lot of the other fantasy books I’ve read, that little scentence makes me want to get this book RIGHT NOW. I love books that are set in the woods and I love myself a badass female heroine.
Also, look at that cover!
